The Grand Opening

Palma, 28  July 1995.

A new scent permeates the air in Paseo Marítimo. Cappuccino Grand Café opens its doors.

Until then, Cappuccino was only in Palmanova, the town where I was born. Even knowing the high risk involved in the investment and having very limited resources at a time when it was difficult to get funding, I ventured to secure one of the largest venues in the city of Palma on the seafront promenade, with a terrace of 500m2 and two large floors totally encased in glass. It was the first time in Mallorca that a café had opened with true, authentic design, and where every corner, every detail was tirelessly conceived to be a real Grand Café.

I remember how the day before the opening, when people saw how the building had been transformed, that they would stop in their tracks and stare, fascinated by how we had lit one of the busiest corners of the city.

From nothing, suddenly wow! It was a magical, spectacular place.

That same day we held an opening party, “The Grand Opening”. The party was inundated. Absolutely everybody we had invited attended. We had commissioned music from a Big Band of 28 musicians, all dressed meticulously in tuxedos, American boys who played cool, soulful jazz in the style of the film Whiplash (Damien Chazelle, 2014). All of the guests were dressed beautifully, none departing from the invitation’s Black Tie dress code.

We have celebrated many openings, parties and events in Cappuccino, but nothing will ever replicate that incredible night.

The next morning, as soon as I awoke, I went down to the beach from my house and, upon entering the sea and starting to swim, I remember that a kind of light touched me.

The feeling of success.

Un lenguaje universal

A Universal Language

Jonathan Bell, the landscaper who is working with us to design the patio, swimming pool and façade of the Hotel from Grupo Cappuccino which opens in March 2018, said to me last week: In my job as a landscaper, I have the fortune of being able to work in any part of the world knowing that through the use of a plant’s Latin name, gardeners and designers working in any garden centre will understand me. It’s a universal language.

Now that my son Louis has become of age, and has finished his last year in school, he tells me that he wants to become a professional barman.
I tell myself, if you speak English and know how to make cocktails, you can work in any part of the world. After all, a Whisky Sour is a Whisky Sour in London or in Venice.
And what’s more, he can play the guitar!

I support him.

Have you ever told your mother that you love her?

Berthe Morisot

I had dinner with a dear friend last week. I asked him if he had ever told his mother that he loves her.

He replied that he sees her every day and that this is his way of showing that he loves her, that he gives her two kisses when he goes on travels, yet knows he should give them every day.

“Sometimes I think that if one day anything were to happen to her, I would know that she knew what I felt for her. And yet I never say it because it’s so hard. It’s something that I think about, that I carry inside.”

Every week…

CAPPUCCINO 0083

El día que descubrimos Cappuccino San Miguel

The day we discovered Cappuccino San Miguel

Number 53 of the Calle San Miguel in Palma de Mallorca has become the emblem of Cappuccino. It is the cornerstone of a brand with worldwide appeal, but which is nevertheless true to the essence of its roots, perfectly symbolised by this Majorcan palace. Looking at it now it’s hard to imagine the state we found it in or to forget the impression it made on us when we crossed its threshold for the first time; it was as if we had uncovered treasure that had been hidden under everyone’s noses for years.

Since 1926, to be precise.

Can Contestí, – that was its name – was one of the few fine houses in Palma that had escaped the lens of Donald G. Murray, co-author with Aina Pascual of the essential book La casa y el tiempo (House and Time), a spectacular tour of the interiors of the city’s manorial homes. “As far as its interior is concerned, we only have references”, they say in the book, “since Can Contestí is another of the exceptional, architecturally Majorcan houses that remain closed until it is renovated, and the current owners have not given us permission to photograph it.”

_DSC8189 hr

After standing abandoned for decades, accessing the interior of Can Contestí through a small side gate was like entering a secret, majestic landscape, despite the ravages of time. In fact, we had to go up to the third floor to appreciate the size of the garden because the weeds prevented us from seeing how large it was.

The refurbishment, performed by a specialist renovation team from Poland, took eighteen months. But it was worth it: number 53 of Calle San Miguel in Palma has become the headquarters of the Cappuccino Group, the offices where we strive every day to realise the dream of a young man who was barely 25 years old when he first walked through the door. It was 2 October 1996.

Seeking inspiration for magic in the modern age

In the rolling foothills of Mallorca’s Tramuntana mountains, we recently found a hidden gem. At the end of a shady long garden path dappled in sparkling sunlight, the beautiful old palace of Alfàbia came into view.

DSC02783 DSC02776 DSC02591 DSC02825 DSC02648 DSC02655 DSC02794

We had never discovered the Alfàbia before, but its ancient tranquillity will continue to inspire us as we create, in Cappuccino, our own magical atmosphere for a modern age.

Un segundo Cappuccino en Madrid: La Moraleja

A second Cappuccino in Madrid: La Moraleja

If the quintessential style of Cappuccino was to be expressed by a single design, Cappuccino La Moraleja would be the definition.

Chairs copyDSC07391 DSC07369

It is a Cappuccino which can be nurtured and enjoyed in the very best and worst of weather, a Cappuccino for all occasions and every time of the year. It is as welcoming as the happiest of family homes, but at the same time a stylish and luxurious urban space. For Cappuccino La Moraleja is the product of a timelessly classic contemporary design coupled with a luminously bright patio, and an expansive terrace flooded with sunshine.

DSC07421 Capuccino_LaMoraleja - 39 DSC07315

Surrounded by a dense verdant landscape of pine trees in this tranquil residential enclave of Madrid, Cappuccino brings the outside in with a terrace abundant in tropical planting and infused with light. At its heart, alongside a curved wooden bar serving creative cocktail fusions, a floating chimney flickers with light and an inviting warmth which radiates off the cosy blue sofas and classic Mallorquin fabrics.

The Day it Snowed in Mallorca

Febrero 2012, 8:05am.

February 2012, 8:05am. It was too early for sun, yet the room filled with a blinding light as though we had slept through winter and awoken mid-summer. However it was not the summer that had brought this atmospheric change, but winter´s most perfect gift: the snow.

Nieve

Enveloped in a seamless blanket, the land of Mallorca was transformed into an island of pure white. Not an insect nor animal stirred; not a sound interrupted the absolute silence suspended above Mallorca´s renewed landscape.

snow1

But in their houses, in rooms illuminated by reflective light, the people of Mallorca scrambled to their windows to take photographs of this alien panorama. Cyberspace was alive with photos exchanged of this unique phenomenon. Memories of the unforgettable day it snowed in Mallorca.

Cappuccino wishes everyone a very happy Christmas
and a New Year full of happiness and success.

Mallorca was very, very poor...

We wanted a special piece of pottery to display on the antique group table inside the kitchen of our newly opened Tahini restuarant in Marbella. This is how we found Maria Antonia, a 72-year resident potter in Son Servera.

She began her story explaining that Mallorca was a very poor country, and the pavements around the church of Son Servera were really narrow… “The Church of Son Servera is unfinished, I live very close by, when I leave my home: Puff! The church is in front of me! The money ran out when they were building the church, so the townspeople continued to build it “.

Senalla mimbre Cappuccino

“La vida me viene un poco pesada. Soy fumadora, soy infinita. Agotadora, me agoto a mi misma.

“Life is difficult for me. I’m a smoker, I am infinite. I’m exhausted – I tire myself out. I am unrepentantly curious. I always look for more. I am able to create beauty – but then I think “these are material things”. They are just material things. In this world I feel very bad. “

At the end of the afternoon, Maria Antonia surprised me with a dedication proclaiming “you are the great businessman and a complete artist” I exchanged my precious book of Axel Vervoordt: Wabi Inspirations for her “senalla” or wicker basket used as a bag…

¿Quién crea la magia?

Who creates the magic?

1268779_10151609569445863_1345029733_o

If I look back 20 years, I’m browsing through records in a music store to give me inspiration for the first compilations, that, as well as provide the sound that I wanted to project the atmosphere of Cappuccino, also offered many other feelings and experiences. That little store was already, at that time, a social network in itself, beyond the minidiscs that I so fondly edited at home later. Every Tuesday afternoon, for years, I took refuge in this friendly environment and I was carried away by the music that filled more than a decade of my life.

There I was recommended the profesional services of  one Pepe Link and here started a mutual personal appreciation of the magic of music. Every Tuesday we engaged in conversation understanding the notes, lyrics and chords, looks and laughs, and together conceived the Cappuccino Grand Café Lounge collections of which, today, we have sold over 120,000 copies of our 7 volumes. We have reveled in different environments of our radio transmissions to over 45,000 listeners online at different times of the day or night and we have turned our music into a trend to an audience that waits for Cd number 8, a work that will move the listener to Paris reflecting the heartfelt notes, rhythms and harmonies from Pepe and myself.

vol1vol2vol3vol4vol5vol6vol7

Pepe Link and I feel genuine excitement knowing that many people receive our emotions through music in their homes  and their lives, with songs that mark moments, poems that accompany people who listen anywhere in the world. Music is one of the purest, most magical forms of perfect communication, and our music defines us, reflects us, and projects a friendship that has contaminated many people -  and is now one of our hallmarks.

We were recommended an experience, calling it “exquisite, in a popular place”, hidden in a valley between the mountains, immersed among lavender fields. Now we are in the process of creating ideas for our own passionate new project, the first Hotel from Grupo Cappuccino, seeking to create a different space to convey many feelings that slowly uncover and intoxicate the senses of our guests.

village

After landing in Nice, we headed to La Colome D’or with anticipation to see what we  would find in a place so admired, so utopian…

The Colome over the years had become a retreat for artists, and they valued this so much, that they gave their works in exchange for living their experience of respite and rest.

Passing through the nooks and crannies, the likes of Picasso, Miro, Matisse, Giacometti and many other virtuosos rendered dormant. Hidden between the plants you will discover an etched bronze creation created from the heart of a sculptor, observing time passing by – or, next to a column, a scrap of the work of a painter who probably for sure, exchanged this for dinner by candlelight at some time.

I noticed that Colome has managed to captivate their  guests in a special way, myself included, which is the same result we are striving for at Cappuccino.

There the atmosphere envelops you throughout your stay, you live the flavors, aromas, sounds, details, feelings –  and forget everything else. It is not ostentatious, not overdone, the decoration is not theatrical, does not have the friendliest service nor a gourmet kitchen, it’s not showy – just a balance between art, simplicity and exquisite elegance. You only return to reality at the end of the stay, when you settle your account, pick up your bags, and walk away, glancing back at the Eden that hides a different spell . It seems that for a few seconds you can even see them; artists of times gone by – they smile back and then continue sculpting, painting, creating dreams and fantasies on their terraces between the mountains, where the air is cooler and the light is different…

I want to build a log cabin, a place where the adventures of my children and their friends come to life, a magical place that will be tattooed on their memories when, in a few years, they find that Peter Pan is so right …

For months I have collected driftwood, pieces of trees, scraps and bits lying on the floor waiting for me to bring them alive in the foundations of a cottage of fantasies and imaginary monsters – where the purest innocence releases the imagination to tell it’s stories.

Great musicians of the world uncovered him as their inspiration and teacher, mythologizing his legacy. Now I hear and feel the magic that transmits the force of his message in his words and musical notes – the distinct style to tune and tap the guitar to speak a different language, a dialect that he thought nobody would ever understand and because of this put an end to his life.

The book was jutting out of the shelf, Picasso and Jacqueline, by David Douglas Duncan. We saw it at Marc Jacobs’ store in the West Village in New York and one glance was enough to know we wanted to get a copy, so we did…

What we like about these snaps is that humanise the genius, as well as immersing us in the couple’s everyday life, seen from an intimate, uncommon viewpoint of their relationship and where both are the stars.

The genius and his muse, discreet, in the shadows but always present, becoming Picasso’s creative drive, giving herself up body and soul and with devotion, to him and his work.

Jacqueline has had her supporters and critics but, on seeing this work, what cannot be denied is the inescapable need that both had to live with each other, forever…

And when we see one of them, it always reminds us of our childhood, those wonderful summers, when we spent endless hours playing on the beach

Chet Baker’s music has so often been a source of inspiration for us that we’ve decided to pay a small homage with this insert.
A self-taught musician, master of improvisation, considered to be one of the best jazz trumpeters ever, ahead of Clifford Brown and even Miles Davis.

The sound of his trumpet, subtle, sweet and at the same time heartrending, has captivated everyone listening to it. His fans included the leading faces of cinema of the time, such as Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum.

A “dark alley” type with a “difficult life”, an inveterate lover of “music, drugs and women” in that order (as he’d stated on several occasions).
So many stories have been told of his life… stories in black and white, some so cruel and others implausible but none that can be ignored…
He lost some of his teeth, it’s not clear whether by accident or through someone settling a score but at no point did that stop him from carrying on doing what he liked most: playing the trumpet. He was a person who, in spite of adversity, always got back up on the stage and seduced with his work all those who followed him.

He spent his last few days in Amsterdam… and they found him lying on the pavement in front of the hotel where he was staying… with his trumpet in his hands…
