The Grand Opening

Palma, 28  July 1995.

A new scent permeates the air in Paseo Marítimo. Cappuccino Grand Café opens its doors.

Until then, Cappuccino was only in Palmanova, the town where I was born. Even knowing the high risk involved in the investment and having very limited resources at a time when it was difficult to get funding, I ventured to secure one of the largest venues in the city of Palma on the seafront promenade, with a terrace of 500m2 and two large floors totally encased in glass. It was the first time in Mallorca that a café had opened with true, authentic design, and where every corner, every detail was tirelessly conceived to be a real Grand Café.

I remember how the day before the opening, when people saw how the building had been transformed, that they would stop in their tracks and stare, fascinated by how we had lit one of the busiest corners of the city.

From nothing, suddenly wow! It was a magical, spectacular place.

That same day we held an opening party, “The Grand Opening”. The party was inundated. Absolutely everybody we had invited attended. We had commissioned music from a Big Band of 28 musicians, all dressed meticulously in tuxedos, American boys who played cool, soulful jazz in the style of the film Whiplash (Damien Chazelle, 2014). All of the guests were dressed beautifully, none departing from the invitation’s Black Tie dress code.

We have celebrated many openings, parties and events in Cappuccino, but nothing will ever replicate that incredible night.

The next morning, as soon as I awoke, I went down to the beach from my house and, upon entering the sea and starting to swim, I remember that a kind of light touched me.

The feeling of success.

El día que descubrimos Cappuccino San Miguel

The day we discovered Cappuccino San Miguel

Number 53 of the Calle San Miguel in Palma de Mallorca has become the emblem of Cappuccino. It is the cornerstone of a brand with worldwide appeal, but which is nevertheless true to the essence of its roots, perfectly symbolised by this Majorcan palace. Looking at it now it’s hard to imagine the state we found it in or to forget the impression it made on us when we crossed its threshold for the first time; it was as if we had uncovered treasure that had been hidden under everyone’s noses for years.

Since 1926, to be precise.

Can Contestí, – that was its name – was one of the few fine houses in Palma that had escaped the lens of Donald G. Murray, co-author with Aina Pascual of the essential book La casa y el tiempo (House and Time), a spectacular tour of the interiors of the city’s manorial homes. “As far as its interior is concerned, we only have references”, they say in the book, “since Can Contestí is another of the exceptional, architecturally Majorcan houses that remain closed until it is renovated, and the current owners have not given us permission to photograph it.”

After standing abandoned for decades, accessing the interior of Can Contestí through a small side gate was like entering a secret, majestic landscape, despite the ravages of time. In fact, we had to go up to the third floor to appreciate the size of the garden because the weeds prevented us from seeing how large it was.

The refurbishment, performed by a specialist renovation team from Poland, took eighteen months. But it was worth it: number 53 of Calle San Miguel in Palma has become the headquarters of the Cappuccino Group, the offices where we strive every day to realise the dream of a young man who was barely 25 years old when he first walked through the door. It was 2 October 1996.
